History of The Valley and Charlton Athletic
Charlton Athletic Football Club has been at home at The Valley stadium in London since the 1920s, apart from a few years between 1985 and 1992. This was due to several relegations leaving the club unable to afford the modern safety improvements needed for the ground to stay open.
When they eventually returned, fans helped clean the stadium after years of neglect, and plans were being made to rebuild The Valley but the council refused this. The club’s supporters formed a political party to fight back against this refusal, which got 15,000 votes in 1990’s local election. In 1992, the new ground opened and Charlton Athletic returned to their home.
