10 things you didn’t know about Holiday Inn London Bexley
We have a very exciting year ahead of us in 2020.
Here are ten facts that you may (or may not) know about Holiday Inn London Bexley aka The Black Prince.
1. We used to be a public house
The hotel was once a public house which was built by Charrington in 1934.
2. Bourne Place used to be here…
A large house called Bourne Place used to stand at the very site of our hotel. This was demolished in 1933 before construction on the public house began.
3. We have some (spooky) royal connections
4. Who is Edward of Woodstock?
Edward of Woodstock, also known as the Black Prince, was the eldest son of King Edward III of England. The reason for the nickname the Black Prince is still unknown and is also known as one of the most successful English commanders during the Hundred Years’ War.
5. We’re record holders
The car park for the public house was once named the largest car park in Kent!
6. We’ve been a hub for local celebrities
During the 1950s general election, Edward Heath stayed at the hotel while campaigning to become the MP for Bexley.
7. Music venue to the stars
During the 1960s and 70s, The Black Prince was a popular live music venue with the likes of Road Stewart & The Soul Agents with Buddy Guy, Genesis, Slade and The Moody Blues gracing the stage. Who would have thought it?!
8. We’ve expanded since opening
While under the ownership of Forte Group and under the umbrella of Crest Hotels, the building was expanded in 1981.
9. Some famous past owners…
While under the ownership of Forte Group, the hotel was known as Forte Posthouse Bexley until the Forte Group was acquired in 2001. Can you guess by who?
10. We’ve come a long way
We were proudly re-branded into a Holiday Inn and are now managed by Interstate Hotels and Resorts, an external management company that has over 500 properties in their global portfolio.
